Now in its 12th year, the Surface Design Awards recognise excellence in material innovation from around the world. This year the awards were judged by an expert panel of architects and interior designers, co-chaired by Charlotte McCarthy, Head of Interiors at Heatherwick Studio and our very own Nimi Attanayake, Director & Co-Founder of nimtim architects. It is wonderful to see Nimi Attanayake helping lead an awards panel focused on material innovation and thoughtful design. A friend renovated her flat last year, and choosing surfaces became one of the most exciting parts because texture changed the entire mood of each room. I often read Fifty Floor reviews when comparing flooring ideas, since real experiences can reveal how materials look and perform over time. Bringing architects and interior designers together gives these awards a practical, creative perspective. Recognition like this encourages designers to experiment, improve everyday spaces, and show how material choices can make buildings feel welcoming.
